Getting to Rocky Point by Land - Puerto Penasco as known as Rocky Point is just 60 miles south of the Lukeville, Arizona / Sonoyta, Mexico border crossing, Puerto Penasco (Rocky Point) is great for the quick weekend getaway! Rocky Point is located on the North West coast of the Sea of Cortez in Northern Sonora, Mexico. Follow Hwy 85 straight through into Mexico. Make sure you get Mexican Insurance, it is required by law. Getting to Rocky Point by Air - Puerto Penasco does have a small airport called Penascos International Airport (Rocky Point Airport) airport code: PPE. The airport has a paved 5,000 ft. airstrip and is about 3 miles from town. There is a small landing fee vary depending on the size of the aircraft, but you can leave your plane overnight free. By Sea - Ferry service from Guaymas, Sonora to the Baja Peninsula is available for passengers as well as automobiles when it is in service. Guaymas is located 5 hours from Rocky Point. The ferry departs the ferry terminal in San Carlos, and lands in the city of Santa Rosalia in Baja California Sur. The ride takes around 6 to 9 hours. Required Paperwork and Permits for Driving to Rocky Point Mexico
Required Paperwork: In order to increase tourism and facilitate investment in Sonora the free Zone program was launched; a unique program to Mexico. Called the Sonora Only Program. Visitors from the United States and Canada can enter and leave the State of Sonora and enjoy the tourist attractions without needing a vehicle permit, within the zone that covers the northeast part of the state, including Rocky Point and Puerto Penasco. If you plan on staying in Mexico any length of time you will need a tourist visa. To bring your automobile into Mexico, you MUST GET MEXICAN AUTO INSURANCE.
